01 Problem Context

ROHINGYA REFUGEE CRISIS  -

Figure 1: Nayapara Refugee Camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

Figure 2: Kutupalong Refugee Camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh

02 Insights & Development

  • Innumerable women and girls who have been violated, tortured, mutilated, degraded, and traumatized.

  • Association with rape is especially in Muslim culture and tradition that these victims are ostracized and completely cut off from their families community

  • The accountability here is extremely tricky to tackle due to the controversy that is met

How might we create a safer system for using toilet to protect Rohingya women and young children at refugee camps from sexual assault

03 Concept Ideation

In these iteration, I focused on brainstorming different pain points that I found in my research - specifically products that can be integrated for Rohingya women

These additional concepts were building upon the previous round of ideas - more emphasis on sound and light

REDEFINED DIRECTION

To create a sound and light device that is low-tech and does not attract unwanted attention.

04 Prototyping and Iteration

These models were created with the sole intent of exploring form and functionality - iterating low tech devices that have components of sound or light, in some cases both

Created 3D models to further explore and get a better understanding of form, proportions and components of the product

06 Reflection

I aim to propose this project to the UNHCR organization as it will help me better understand how the users will engage with the product. In order to do so we will require a high fidelity prototype to be able to test this product within the Rohingya Refugee Camp in Kutapalong, Bangladesh.

If this project were to be realized it would need the following resource allocation according to my research and findings over this project’s timeline.

Estimated Resources

  • 10k funding for raw materials and project realization

  • 5 pax - refugee managers to facilitate product distribution

  • Factory batch production

  • 3 pax - Product designers

  • 4 pax - Awareness campaign team
